I inadvertantly tightened my valve cover bolts to my spark plug spec torque. My vavle cover bolts were supposed to be 43 - 78 in/lbs instead I tightened them to 15ft/lbs. I did this with my brand new torque wrench and didn't realize that it hadn't reached the set torque, instead i snapped three bolts in the head.
It has an aluminum valve cover and head. My question is can i just tap out the bolts or am i going to have to replace the head? The bolts broke off above the entrance to the head and there appears to be no damage to the remaining thread holes. I am new to removing broken bolts if any one has words of advice re: removing these, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

If they are broken above the surface of the head you can try to get them out, using a clamp of some type, if not your going to have to drill them out and rethread the holes, not fun at all, but it beats paying for a new head, I bet you will never forget how that torque wrench works again

You can definatly drill them and take them out, if you had them off just recently, they should come out easily..
Wheel down to the local hardware store and get the right part, or if you're real lazy, drill and tap the hole, put a new boltin with some thread lock, let it set and yank 'em out.
Should cause no damage at all, just replace the bolts.

I was able to get the broken bolts out w/o any drilling and the theads in the head all look fine. Now i've spent all damn day driving around looking for bolts to no avail. Anyone know of a good online or local (LA) resource for getting bolts?
