I know most of you guys are sport bike riders. I rode dirt bikes as a kid but consider myself a new rider... here are some bikes i am considering...
SV650/Gladius
HD Nightster
Honda Fury
Victory Vegas 8ball
I'm leaning towards a cruiser but wondering how much fun I'm giving up over a beginnerish sport bike like the sv650.

If this is your first bike, i would not buy a brand new. theres a good chance you will drop it, and i would not want to drop a brand new bike. I would recommend a honda shadow/magna. they both can be used as a beginner bike or bikes for advanced riders.
Just a side note, i have the magna and i absolutly love it. its got the interceptor motor in it, so its really quick if you really rev it high, but very easy to handle if the rpms are kept down, its light, easy to menuver and handles really really well for a cruiser. you can also find them really cheap.
good luck and ride safe

I'm not a fan of the cruiser riding position. You can't redistribute your weight between your backside, hands, and feet.
A more standard bike like the SV650 naked, Gladius, ER6N, etc. is ideal as far as I'm concerned. Your feet are beneath you instead of way forward, you lean forward a little which helps against wind resistance, and your hands are low enough to help support your weight, wihtout being TOO low (as on a dedicated sport bike).
Cruisers are only good for short-distance low-speed around town posing as far as I'm concerned. But of course opinions vary greatly!

I agree with ZDan that standards are much easier to control. Not only the weight distribution but also the front end geometry and both tire sizes, at least on typical cruisers. A raked out front, skinny front tire with wimpy brake, and uber-fat rear tire may look bitchin' but they handle like ass.
But motorcycles are not an entirely rational experience. So at the end of the day, go with your gut.
