Oil Change question
Hey guys-
I did an oil change on my girlfriend's 2003 Honda Civic LX Coupe. I forgot that it was a SOHC, and put the standard 3.75-4 quarts of oil in, instead of the recommended 3.2-3.5 quarts. I noticed that there was oil leaking from the forward seal on the transmission (manual) and from the oil seal on the right side fo the engine (transversely mounted....I think its the main rear). We are taking it into Honda tomorrow to have them take a look at it. I know that my overage by .5 quarts did not cause this leak, as it was dripping on my head prior to it even being drained for the change. Would Honda have any grounds voiding my warranty because of the slight overage on the oil level?
Side Note: I never actually started the car with the oil level high. I lowered it, checked the level, noticed it was high, drained the oil (again), read owner's manual, put in 3.5ish quarts. There was a bit of smoke out the tail pipe. The car also sat unused for 1 week straight when this occured.

Sorry. I just thought it was an engine related question and Under The Hood seemed like the best place to get info.
I read something else online about this. It said that over-filling would just cause the crank to emulcify the excess oil, and that oil would float, and since the oil sump is in submerged in the pan, it would not pull any of the bad stuff up.
It also said that the crank case pressure would rise, and the weakest seals would probably leak, until the excess pressure has been released, then they would seal up again.
Is this stuff true? Or just BS?

I could be wrong, but if you didn't even start the car before draining it I don't believe you will have a problem. You may want to run it by a mechanic not affialiated with Honda first and see what he/she has to say.
I bet whomever changed the oil before never cleaned up after themselves. 5th gen Civics are messy when you remove the filter, oil drains along the block, oil pan, and transmission. Gotta clean it off.
