Poll on the Solstice and Sky
Of course they're both direct competition for the S. You have to look outside this forum. I think that we're hopefully a bit more knowledgable about cars than the general public. I'd bet the "average" person is going to see nice looking two-seat convertables. GM is going to sell tons of these things. At least in the beginning.
Frank said exactly what I was thinking.
The majority of roadsters and sports cars purchased are never driven hard at all. The general public (i.e., the people that the manufacturers MUST sell to) will see each car listed as a "cool, little convertable" and that's all.
The enthusisasts are the not the core buyer. The people that want to know: if it comes in Automatic, if it has a 6 cd changer, if it has heated seats, etc...are the core buyers. They are the people that will buy it on a whim because they have the money to do so and then sell it in a year because they don't understand why such an expensive car has such awful ride quality.
You need to look outside enthusiasts forum once in a while. "Competition" doesn't mean on the road, it means snaring potential buyers that are better off financially than the majority of the people on this forum.

My speculation:
Some versions may compete.
To many buyers that last little bit of performance may not matter. They may be swayed by the looks or the price. Some will honestly prefer driving the GM cars because they ride softer/harder/better placement of X/fit the particular person better. Not reasons we would consider to be

I personally would never cross shop those cars vs the s2k. I would also (flamesuit on) never compare a pontiac to an s2000. The engineering that went into the solstice isnt in the same ballpark as the s2k.
IMO, anyone who cross-shops an S2000 with the Solstice or Sky cannot afford the S2000 in the first place. The Solstice and Sky compete more with the Miata than the S, which the 06 Miata will win.

That's a pretty inaccurate statement to make.
I cross shopped the following: S2K, 350Z, Boxster, SLK230, SLK320, MSMiata, and a Base Miata. I also though about waiting until the Solstice came out but didn't feel like waiting two years. I didn't look at the Elise because, frankly, I wanted somthing I could tear up the roads with but still be able to stash stuff from Lowe's or load up my golf clubs.
I could have afforded any of them, in cash. I bought the MSM because that is what I liked the best after the test drives.
So just because somebody is looking across a big range of price, doesn't mean they can't afford it. In fact, if price is the only basis and you get the costliest one, one may suggest that person is a poseur.
