I think you're undervaluing the Cayman chassis. I think they hold the engine back to keep selling the expensive models. Otherwise it'd be better in just about every way!

Crazy Porsche. Why would they possibly want to sell more cars and make more money? That's so wrong.

Exactly. That's the bottom line for a car company. It may make some purists [of the brand] cranky, but it's exceptional given the economic climate. A recent article discussing Porsche's revenues:

The Group annual surplus (profit after taxes) climbed to EUR 6.392 billion (previous year: EUR 4.242 billion) in the period under review. The earnings per share, corrected for splitting, were EUR 35.94 (previous year: EUR 23.98) per ordinary share and EUR 35.95 (previous year: EUR 23.99) per preferred share.
That's stellar also according the article:

The above-average jump in profit was again due to special influences in connection with the holdings in Volkswagen AG, Wolfsburg, Germany.

Which you could argue also dilutes the brand equity.

Honestly the Cayman and Boxster are outstanding executions. It's funny you mention the CGT - ever wonder why the ultimate Porsche used the mid-engine platform? Because it's superior to 911 rear engine layout - but there's so much brand identification with the 911, they keep it as their flagship performance platform (minus super exotics like the CGT).
