Replacement for S2000
I'm on the fence about staying in my s2000 more than another year or 2 - it's over a decade old now. IDK if you can find one in your price range, what your practicality concerns might be, etc. but I'm considering a 370Z as a replacement. I know you can probably find a 350/370 convertible in your price range, but i think the supply is even worse than S2ks. Main reason for me - RWD, 300+hp, still fun, if not as nimble as the S, and still fairly light (3300lbs).
What does that have to do with anything? Did I miss the expiration date stamped on the bottom of my s?
My 15 y/o s is exceptionally reliable. It has little to do with age. Longevity is determined more by treatment and maintenance than anything else.

While I think the 370Z is a great looking car with plenty of horses to have fun, I wouldn't exactly call it fairly light haha. I'm not entirely too worried about practicality or HP but prefer lighter cars that are just plain fun to drive and toss around. While I've never driven one, the 370Z just seems to heavy for that without modifications.
My S was MY2000 and was still running PERFECTLY. Maybe he's had the car for over a decade and needs something new?

The terms "3300 lbs" and "fairly light" should never appear directly together unless separated by the word "not."
If I were in your shoes and absolutely, positively couldn't find an S2k I wanted for $16k I'd pocket the money and pick up a beater you can turn around and resell for a minimal loss once you find your white whale.

Price range tops out around $16k.
True, I hadn't considered picking up a beater to use meanwhile searching for another S2k. But seeing as how the market for S2ks is pretty slim right now, I'm worried of the chances that the beater could end up failing me and I'm back to square one -__-

A WRX weighs 3200, while the lightest Zs are in the upper 3200 range, and the Gen Coupe is between 33-3500. Even a Civic Si up to 3000lbs now and muscle cars are closer to 4000.
An extra 400lbs for an extra 100hp and the ability to pretty easily stuff 275+ width tires under the rear doesn't seem like a bad trade-off to me. It would be nice on track at least.
