Hey I just read that (after what I wrote the above) is that something like it?

Really one nice car is OK for most people but I'd take 2 over one with the caveat that one of the two is fun to drive. That is one pleasure car that I can drive for no particular reason other than just for fun.

It's the question of one car trying to do a lot of things well but ends up doing a lot of things less well. Grasp at everything and get nothing.

You can argue against my philosophy, but there's no way a M5 is as fun-to-drive as an Elise or Miata or S2000. The M5 is a 4000 lb tourer with a lot of power and a stiff suspension.

What's wrong with the current S2000 + BMW 540?

Funny, I had the S2000/Corolla combination myself up till this spring. It was an old Corolla ('86) that I bought from my grandmother years ago. My friends would tease me about that car but it was rock solid, and was quicker and tighter than some American cars I've rented recently.

There's something cool about having a car you can completely not worry about. Great to bring to the malls, ball games or the city. Forget about leaving her unlocked, when it was real cold in the winter I'd leave her parked with the engine running when I went in to pick up some groceries On the other hand I'm an anal retentive nut about the S2000.

I wound up getting a very nice compliment to the S. I found a 2001 Prelude SH with 8,500 miles. It's Electron Blue which is pretty cool too.

The M5's a great car but I'd opt for the 2.

I currently have a 95' Accord and my s2000. It's a great combination and the worry free aspect of the Accord is wonderful. I can basically take it anywhere, park it anywhere and not worry with an M5 I would be just as concerned as I am about leaving my S2000 parked in public places.

my buddies M5 was lapping everything in sight at Mosport (a world-class track - F1 used to race there years ago) a few weeks ago....with a passenger (me) in the car and the A/C on.

you may want to reconsider your statements if you have no personal experience.

my buddy also has an S2000 that he hasn't driven in months....he says "what's the point?"

Very close to my Ignore list just so I won't have to look at your avatar.

I do have experience having driven both M5s and M3s.

They're fine. But (IMO) in no way to be considered sports cars.

A Bentley GT can lap faster than a Miata so what's your point?

I gaurantee you a M5 won't pass a well driven C5 Z06 or C6 and that's what we're talking about if you're spending ~$40K for a used M5 . I'd rather have a used C5 Z06 and a beater than a used M5. The C5 Z06 does not grasp at being a 4-door 4000 lb luxury car as well as a sports car.

I currently have a Tundra and a Del Sol, it is very nice to get 35mpg running on 87 with gas prices these days. Weekends and short trips like going to the market, gym, costco I take the truck. Trips of 20+ miles one way I use the del sol. Sometimes I worry about getting crushed in that sardine can, but chance of getting into a fatal accident driving in a parking (socal freeways) lot is very unlikely.

I am going to get a S2K soon to replace the tundra, not really sure what I will do with the Del Slo, costs about 1k a year but its good to have a second car in case anything happens.

*sigh* not too long ago, it cost $30 to fill up my truck, now the Del Sol costs about that much to fill up.

Go with the S2k and Corolla man, I have a friend who has replaced two motors on his 2 year old M3. He is trying to sell it before the warranty runs out and he has to pay for a new motor.

Go with the M5.

I believe they came with angel eyes and the LED taillights for 2001+ models (I could be wrong). But you could change that out yourself if it bothers you.

There's nothing like having 1 car that you really want to drive all of the time versus 2 cars that you kind of want to drive.
