That's quite a big disparity in choices! How would the Gas Gas be impossible? Sure, it would be red sticker, but that just restricts you from riding on certain public land in the summer months. You could always get a grandfathered used bike ('02 or '03 are older IIRC) which will allow a green sticker.

I had an '03 Sherco 2.9 until last summer, and it was fun, but was kind of limiting. Once I got my KTM 300 XC-W and figured it was capable of the gnarliest terrain around, I ditched the trials bike w/ no regrets. I'm sure I'd have a different perspective if I kicked ass at it - those pros make it look so easy!
