standard version vs uber version
Regular WRX vs STi (well until recently when the WRX got the big boost in power and same looks)
Lancer vs. Evo (completely different car IMO, I think they share very few body panels even).
Base Mini vs turbo Cooper S
Boxster/Cayman/911 base vs S models
IS250 vs IS-F
Mercedes base C class vs C63 AMG.
A4 vs RS4
BMW is really the only one out of the luxury makers that I wouldn't mind owning the base cars vs. the M cars especially for daily driver duties (135/335/550i vs 1M, M3, M5).

Pretty much any of them that are offered in "standard" trim from anyone.
Sucks knowing the one you bought isn't as good as it could be - which is why I prefer cars that are purpose built and not modified to appeal to as many as possible - they'll never be special because they sell out (like the Mustang).
Exceptions of course lie in cars like the Porsche 911 and maybe even the Corvette.. although it again, sucks the when you pull up to a Z06 with better brakes, rubber, wheels, body, engine.. etc.

I can also think of plenty of reasons I'd love to have a Z06 as well, but then what happens when you pull up to a ZR1? There's always someone out there w/ a better car, and letting your satisfaction be influenced by what others have is a sure-fire recipe for dissatisfaction.
The '11 Mustang V6 w/ the Performance Pkg. would be a cool ride that I'd be happy to own, esp. as a combo track car/DD. Sure, I'd rather have a GT or even better a Boss 302 all else equal, but I could have plenty of fun w/ the V6, and it's prob. better balanced w/ less weight up front.
Some cars I wouldn't want a base model of:
- Caddy CTS
- Subie Imprezza
- Mitsu Lancer
- 911, Boxster, or Cayman
- Hyundai Genesis Coupe
dude, most cars that have a performance variant don't appeal to me in base trim. I guess I'm just the target that they're shooting for...the guy that wants more performance and is willing to pay for it to the extent I can.

it's funny when it comes to wheel design. sometimes i wonder if the company is tellin it's designer "even though you know what a nice lookin rim would look like, draw us something kinda fugly for the base trim."
As far as the ops question:
cobalts
v6 muscle cars
imprezas
lancers
I'm sure I'll think of others later.

Another good example would be the Caddy CTS, you couldn't pay me to take it. But the CTS-V...I might would trade the S2000 for it.
Base Camaro wouldn't do anything for me, but I'm going to drool over the upcoming Z28.
