As a previous C6 owner, I can say a base Vette performs great enough for me.
Enough power and handling capabilities that I'll ever need, period.
But they look plain and not-so-special among other traffic.
The Z however, looks that much more aggressive and special compared to the base C6.
It's funny how the bulging fenders and wider tires along with the massive brakes make the car look that much different.
While I totally respect the performance of a base C6, it's not a head turner.
The Z is a different story.
ZR1? that's an exotic.
I guess I care a lot about the exterior/look when it comes to cars. And I don't think that's a bad thing.

How come you don't like the Genesis coupe? base? I admit the 2.0T was pretty gutless stock but I think with some cheap and simple upgrades (up the boost, open the exhaust) it can hang with the V6 easily, especially if you get the R package.

The GS is the Corvette to get imo. Nice kit and body without being a plain-jane C6 or a overpowered beast for daily use like the Z06. The fender hash marks are very unique too.
tooThe GS is definitely the best value C6 out there. Hand built LS3, TR6060, Z06 wheels/tires, Z06 brakes, dry sump, wide-body for a very reasonable real-world price.
I was surprised (but not too surprised when I thought about it) to read the Z06 sales for 2010 were just awful because people either got the GS or ZR1. The GS is a 95% Z06 as the only major differences are the aluminum chassis and LS7.
edit: I found the link to the 2010 preliminary production numbers (code AJ7 is on every Vette to see totals by model):

^^^ Interesting stats, thanks for posting. The GS was a huge hit, taking 49% of all '10 sales. What's most surprising is to see that the ZR1 outsold the Z06 around 3 to 1! Who ever said a six figure Vette wouldn't sell?

Another reason why the GS sold so well was because there were a lot of Corvette fans that wanted a 'widebody' convertible. Or automatic. Or both.

Or you could just look at the top row that says "Total 2010 Corvette".

Yeah, the ZR1 and the GS really cannibalized the Z06 sales. The LS3 really is a great motor and isn't THAT far off an LS7. Now, it's definitely not an LS7, but average rwhp of a GS LS3 is around 390rwhp bone stock. Average LS7 horsepower is roughly 450ish rwhp. So, 60rwhp of which 40+rwhp of that can be made up on the LS3 with intake, headers, exhaust, and tune. Of course, the same goes for the LS7. Average LS9 rwhp is around 540-550rwhp bone stock which is a nice jump over the LS7 (roughly 100rwhp).
Either way, the GS is the best-value ticket hands-down which is why it sold so well (relatively speaking).
