Cannot think of any currently offered but--

We loved our Nissan 200SX SE-R, wouldn't touch the base model.

Why are people so against the base CTS? I think both the base and CTS-V are really nice. I don't really see those as any different than base C class vs AMG C class.
Exactly.
I have extensively driven both the CTS sedan(RWD, 3.6DI) and the CTS-V sedan(6MT), and they're totally different animal
Even exterior-wise, I don't consider them as same vehicles.

I'm not 'against" the base CTS. I just like the CTS-V that much more.

While I know the base CTS is a nice car, it does nothing for me particularly because the wheels/tires seem out of balance with the rest of the car. Also, not such a huge fan of the chrome fender treatment on any of the CTS cars. But, I love the CTS-V because it just looks purposeful and mean. Same with the M3 vs. 328i or C63 versus C300, etc.

Also, I'd drive the Cobalt SS turbo, but not the base model. The base Corvette was and is a great car, but styling wise, it's clean and nice, but not that dramatic whereas the Z06 and ZR1 have a more aggressive stance and look.

Though, it makes me wonder if the higher models have greater appeal to me because of their underlying performance capabilities and not so much their exterior styling. That is probably the case for me since I value acceleration, handling, and braking so much.

For example, I got the Yukon Denali because I could get the 6.2 motor and six-speed automatic even though I actually preferred the styling of the Tahoe LTZ, but in '08, I could only get the Tahoe with the 5.3/4-speed which had no interest to me.

I pretty much agree, especially with the second paragraph. In a 5 second thought of sub 100K vehicles I cannot think of one special car that was not purpose built unless the supra shared chassis w/ the sc3/400
Viper immediatly comes to mind...

Easily the most raw performance production car built in the sub 100k or even 100k+ catagory

I think you confirmed his comment. The Viper was purpose-built. How about the Z06 vette? Definitely a 'special' car yet built up from the base vette. Or the Cayman S, unless you don't think that is special.

Why do you consdier the 135 or 335 the base models?
Good point, I was thinking more along the lines of the special version (M, AMG, etc) vs the next best "regular" line. That being said, I rented a 128i convertible to drive from socal to SF along PCH and it was great fun even flying through the mountain pass from San Simeon to Monterey, plenty capable.

Dude, don't think of pulling up to a higher-spec model of the same car as a dick-measuring contest you just lost, and be happy w/ your ride's attributes on its own. I can think of plenty of reasons to buy a GS C6, including removable roof, avail. of auto (if that floats your boat), better gas mileage, lower ins./cost, etc.

I can also think of plenty of reasons I'd love to have a Z06 as well, but then what happens when you pull up to a ZR1? There's always someone out there w/ a better car, and letting your satisfaction be influenced by what others have is a sure-fire recipe for dissatisfaction.

The '11 Mustang V6 w/ the Performance Pkg. would be a cool ride that I'd be happy to own, esp. as a combo track car/DD. Sure, I'd rather have a GT or even better a Boss 302 all else equal, but I could have plenty of fun w/ the V6, and it's prob. better balanced w/ less weight up front.

Some cars I wouldn't want a base model of:
- Caddy CTS
- Subie Imprezza
- Mitsu Lancer
- 911, Boxster, or Cayman
- Hyundai Genesis Coupe
How come you don't like the Genesis coupe? base? I admit the 2.0T was pretty gutless stock but I think with some cheap and simple upgrades (up the boost, open the exhaust) it can hang with the V6 easily, especially if you get the R package.

As a previous C6 owner, I can say a base Vette performs great enough for me.
Enough power and handling capabilities that I'll ever need, period.
But they look plain and not-so-special among other traffic.
The Z however, looks that much more aggressive and special compared to the base C6.
It's funny how the bulging fenders and wider tires along with the massive brakes make the car look that much different.

While I totally respect the performance of a base C6, it's not a head turner.
The Z is a different story.
ZR1? that's an exotic.
I guess I care a lot about the exterior/look when it comes to cars. And I don't think that's a bad thing.

He sure did...

I don't think the cayman is special and I don't think the vette is special either. Great cars for sure but not special.

List of the first 5 special cars that come to mind south of 100k

last gen Supra
fd rx7
elise
nsx
gtr

Clearly its not based on performance but moreso rarity and uniqueness. Most american cars are not special to me b/c they are everywhere. Where I live I see more caymans than s2000's and I see more vettes(c6) than probably my whole list combined. The first time I saw a zr1 on the road I said "oh nice a zr1" but my eyes did not follow it. But if I see any one the vehicles in the list I always try to get a better look and admire the art of the car.
