Is that completely a function of the board slowing down or the fact that the auto industry has been pretty uninteresting? When Hyundai gets most of the auto press, it is a sign that things have gotten boring.

it's both. Some of the best members have moved on to bigger, badder toys and their associated forums. Auto news has been slow with the middle-higher end cars, and at the same time, we're all getting older and making more money...making the less expensive cars less interesting to talk about. I'm sure there are forums out there for the new hyundais and toyotas/subarus that have a million posts a day right now.
I'm thinking back to when I joined this board like 5+ years ago...and since there have been a pretty exciting stream of new cars to discuss...the GTR mules & eventual launch, the new NSX mules, ZR1, new M3, IS-F, RS4, C63, R8, veyron, koenigseggs, 458, etc...seems like lately about the only new thing is the aventador, LF-A and huayra, which are way out of reach for most of us. It should pick up as we see the new models of the above begin to come out...the new porsches as they are released and tested, the new M3 and RS4 and 2nd gen IS-F will be a great one to watch, the next gen GTR when we get there should be crazy, and if Honda ever gets back into the NSX and s2000 game...so, good things on the horizon but I don't think it'll ever be what it was when we all still owned s2ks and the sports car was making a comeback.

I got an email with a pm link to your post lol. I lurk from time to time. The site redo/"upgrade" took away my steam especially since I lost ALL of my pictures that I post that were in my gallery.
