Default STi

Here's an interesting post I just ran across at another site. It was posted by Stealthy (Perry) who used to own an S2000 and has done a lot of track time at Gingerman with it. He sold his S2000 and now has a BMW M3.

"I got a hold of my friend's STi and we decide to bring it to Gingerman for some fun. Let me tell ya, I can't believe how fast this car really is until when I get to the track. I ran 1:39:13 (my fastest). On average, it was about 1:39:40. That is really fast and the whole car is STOCK (That include brake pads, brake fluid and stock street tire). On top of that, that is FULL 2 seconds faster than my bone stock E46M3 (ok, I got racing braking fluid, racing brake pads and larger front tire). Totally, pisses me off."

That's impressive.

I was 4+ seconds faster than a E36 M3 that was running at Beaver Run.... laps are only 1:08-1:10 for me mostly....

There was an EVO at Summit Point last weekend that completely obiterated the field. We started out behind him (in my friend's modded WRX wagon) and didn't see him after the first lap. After a 30 minute session he almost lapped the last car. He was running a striaght pipe and some sort of custom intake. Sounded mean!

I'd still rather have the STi, but I'm slightly biased.

Oh yeah, the EVO looks 100x better in person. The Altezzas don't look half-bad, either. But I'd still swap 'em for EVO VII tails.

Gingerman is 1.9 miles with 11 turns. I think it's unlikely a completely stock S2000 would be pulling the times the completely stock STi did, unless it was with an exceptional driver.

wow, Dave, I can't believe you read that post.

Anyway, I am the driver of both E46M3 and WRX STi. I drove both car at Waterford this weekend. My M3 is about the same as the STi in Waterford, which is a very twisty track. Overall, I think STi is faster on almost all the tracks than E46M3. E36M3 is out of the question in stock form (but, so far, my highly modded E36M3 is the fastest in Waterford). In my opinion, BMW M3 is under a lot of threat lately. There are so many cars are aiming at E46M3 on performance with $10K~$20K under E46M3 price, sometime even surpass E46M3 performance. I hope BMW do something about it. I am sure lots of people is going to jump ship, if they don't change. (I am sure I am next to jump ship).

Scot, I am sure you are a very good driver. You have to drive both cars to compare. Most of driver's school or open track's performance are mostly driver dependant rather than car dependant.

Hi Perry, I'm equally surprised you're still reading the S2k site! Thanks for the added feedback.

Haven't seen an STi at the track yet, but awhile back there was an EVO at TWS. We were running circles around it in my dad's almost-stock Q45.

Obviosly, the EVO couldn't drive worth shit. Very fast car but I've yet to see one with a competent driver behind the wheel.

to the STi for outrunning the E46 M3.
