STI or EVO
The reliability issues that everyone talks about is almost always just anecdotal based off of what threads they may or may not have seen on some random forum site. Take them with a grain of salt.
'06 Evo here with 21k miles in less than a year. Some of those miles are track time, and no problems other than a defective clutch (replaced no questions asked at 8k miles). The "fun factor" is very comparable to the S2k thanks to great steering feedback. It also makes an awesome track car and the modability is tremendous.
Evos cost the same as STI's here, so there's not much of a decision to make for me. We'll see if Subaru can mix that up in the next couple years though.

i used to own an 04 evo for 3 years. I just sold it last month.
For the 50k miles i've driven it, there were no mechanical problems at all. It was more reliable than the 98 gsr that i had bought new.
my only problems were due to the cheap body paint fading, the carbon wing fading, the leather seats fading ( i had the option with leather, sunroof, and subwoofer), and the expensive advan tires.
i would highly recommend it to anyone considering it.

They are both great cars. You can't go wrong with either.
I ended up buying the Evo IX over the STi because I felt that the Evo just had more soul. The STi was nice and quick, but the driving experience was less satifying to me and more like an appliance. I also planned on keeping the car stock so the 5yr/50,000mi|10yr/100,000mi warranty the Evo offered was a big selling point for me. Plus, I was able to get employee pricing on the Mitsubishi.
In all my years of researching and debating the two, I found that neither one has an advantage in reliability. The STi and Evo are both very reliable cars in stock form as long as they are maintained properly. And they can both be very unreliable cars once you start adding lots of mods to them

i recently got an STI. I think it looks better then the evo, both interior and exterior. the evo is more $$$ then the STI.

My vote would go to the STi, I owned an '05. The car is rock solid and even with over 2,000 miles of private, open track days in one year, I had zero problems with the car. Fluids, brake pads, brake rotors, and tires were all it needed (and the STi needed them often). Dislikes; seats, radio, and thin paint.
I have also spent a full month with a friends '05 Evo MR (lucky me). For comparison sake, the Evo is more responsive, and I prefer its handling characteristics over the STi. The factory Recaro seats are awesome and the transmission is silky smooth. Dislikes; boy racer styling (for me), turbo lag, and Mitsubishi brand.
