I would typically have the 600 miles service done by the dealer, the better ones actually do what they are supposed to and check all of the nuts and bolts, inspect everything for defects, etc. Plus when you resell it it's a good selling point. After that bikes are pretty maintenance free except for chain cleaning/lube. Change the engine oil/filter every so often and they're good to go. Most don't need valve adjustments for quite a while anymore either (I think the R1 is like 26000 miles or something crazy?).

Don't waste your money in first service crap. Just have them do a oil change for $50-$60 including oil and filter. Why spend $200-$250 on a glorified oil change. This is not Ducati....

The first service shouldn't run more than $100. Yeah it's only $30 worth of parts ($10 filter, $20 oil) and another $70 for labor but the hour of labor isn't bad considering the bodywork they take off and the other little things they do. It takes me nearly that long to clean and then lube my chain without a rear stand It is a glorified oil change yes but a good dealer actually does go over what they are supposed to. Hell mine even cleaned my dirty ass wheels for me

The dealer wanted $28 for the oil filter. Are they out of their mind? I already oredered a few quarst of Motul oil but I can't find the oil filter for a good price.

Try Ronayers.com for the oil filter. Put in the part number is the best way. I found the 5GH-13440-00-00 for the older R6's for $11.13, they usually use the same filters on all similar bikes (for example the above listed part number is for the R1 as well).
