I owned '01 LeMans Blue for 2 year and that car was a beast. The only mod you'll need on that car is a short shift kit and you are all set. If you have an opportunity to get one do it, as they've become quite a bargain in the used car market now.

Here is a picture of my old beast:
That color is amazing.

I just bought one.

2001 Gray/Camel with 45K miles on it, only one word describes the car "Amazing". There is no platic in the car every surface is covered in leather [dash, doors, center console] or alcantara [roof, rear parcel rack]. 400hp on tap is not to bad either.

If you do end up getting this car invest in a good extended warranty it will more than pay for itself. I got one with bumper to bumper coverage up to 100K miles without a time limit.

Only the original (1st) owner of the car can extend the factory BMW warranty up to 6 yrs/100k as long as the car is not past the warranty period. If you are buying one and it happens to still be in warranty, talk to the original owner about extending it (it will cost you ~ 2500).

The extended maintenance plan on the other hand can be extended by any owner as long as you extend it before the maintenance plan is over.

Anything other than that you are going to have to go aftermarket, unless it was a CPO car from the dealer (Certified Pre Owned). HTH.

Its aftermarket. You have to make sure you are working with a reputeable company with good feedback and "BBB" ratings.

Yeah I am debating about a m3 or a m5... those are my choices at the moment.

I feel however that the new m3 that comes out will make the e49 m3 depreciate in value quite quickly.

The E46 M3 has been depreciating well for a while now. There is a glut of them out on the market. I sold my 03 earlier this year for $43k with mods on it. I'm sure you can get one for a really good price.
And the replacement isn't due out til early 2008 (E92)
