Today I looked at a 2002 Porsche Targa 6 spd w/62k miles. NADA Clean Trade for my 2005 Corvette is $21,525. Clean Retail on the Porsche is $24,925. If I'm looking to trade my Corvette for the Porsche that's a $3,400 difference. Would my car and say $5,000 be a fair offer?
Not sure the Porsche will be the "ninja" you want..

I'd rather walk than own a 996. Go back to your S2000.

Either the 911 has had a new engine or it will need one...be aware they had oil leak problems and rear main issues. The water cooled are after the 1998 car (last of the air cooled) were laden with issues, thus the low price. Have it checked out, if it's ok then you are good to go cause a better car, either made before or after the issues will set you back more for that very good reason.

would you want a stock corvette? or a used boxster S?

It's very difficult to catch the 996's scariest problem even with a full PPI. What I'm talking about is the IMS bearing issue, which can lead to sudden catastrophic engine failure. It seems to be a pretty low probability problem, but the consequences are nasty. If I bought a 996, the first thing I would do is take preemptive action, and replace the IMS bearing with the upgraded LN Engineering part. It's about $2k-$3k for the fix.

The 996 engine issue is overblown. I've had mine for 20k miles over a couple years, and am at 100k miles total, in which it has been to 20+ track days, often in desert summer heat (100-105F). I also daily-drive it in traffic. I've never had to add a drop of oil between regular changes.

It's an amazing car. How many other ~3000lb, ~300hp, ~30MPG (highway), practical sports cars are there out there for less than $20K? It's quite a bit faster than my old S2000s (hello, torque), has more features, is more comfortable, practical and makes for a much better daily. It sounds way better. Non-car people think it's the latest model.

What sucks about it? Most other 911s look better (coilovers and wheels help a lot though). The interior components are cheap and fall apart. Routine maintenance is moderately pricey, but no more than it is for an M3.

The much-adored and much more expensive 997 is just a mildly improved 996 with better aesthetics. The gorgeous 993 is heavier, slower, has an ancient interior and isn't even as much fun to drive.

The 993 is a classic, and is the last true 911. That's why a clean 993 costs more than a 997. The 996 issues aren't overblown; hence the proposed class action settlement for the poorly engineered IMS on the M96. The ugly exterior, cheap interior, and poorly engineered motor is what makes the 996 a "good buy" (i.e. the cheapest 911 to get into). If it were actually a good car; it's market price would reflect that.
