Upgrading from the S?
You are in a similar situation I was. I'm currently on my 3rd S2000. Started on an AP1 new in 03, got a new AP2 in 04, then had to sell it a year later when I moved out the country.
When I returned I bought a new GRB STi which could accommodate my new family and still be fun to drive. It served it's purpose. Eventually my wife got an outback and I got rid of the STi and got a G37 convertible (heavy gas guzzling pig beast).
After all this I found myself perpetually dissatisfied. I went out and purchased an 03 S2000 w/ 8,800 miles about two months ago. THE BEST AUTOMOTIVE DECISION OF MY LIFE. There is nothing like it. If you get rid of your S2000 you'll convince yourself your happy a couple of months, but will find yourself nearly depressed when the truth that nothing can match the nimble characteristics, pure driving exhilaration, fun, balance, and reliability of the S2000.

I'm keeping my 3" HKS and 3" HFC + some other goodies and I'll be putting them on his car to 'keep' them around.
Imo there are only two paths to take to "upgrade" from an S2000.
Absolute Power - aka a C6
S2000 Plus - aka a Porsche Boxster S
There's also the lateral upgrade, "I need an S2000 sedan" - RX-8, but thats also the "I need worse mpg" change.
Everything else isn't an upgrade, its a change.

The only 2 cars that I like better than the S2000 are:
1. NSX - Ferrari looks,Accord comfort and reliability, and 911 kind of sounds and performance mixed in one package!
2. 997 911 . WOW what a car . Awesome steering feel, superb brakes, wonderful growl of that flat 6, excellent handling for a rear weight bias car (How did they do that?) . Used ones are now on sale half price off new. But if you don't listen to me go drive one I dare you and you will learn why these are Legendary!! One drive is all it takes to understand.
I don't think any car in your price range will be an upgrade, but another car that meets your criteria is a G35. It's definitely more practical and still probably a decent amount of fun but I couldn't see myself buying one over an S2000.
