poor experience with my GFs MK4 jetta also. lots of weird stuff failing on a babied car with low mileage.
when (2009 jetta) VW scores a 5.0 out of 10 for reliability by JD Power, you know that VWs are not reliable. no BS here.

Much better to look at actual data, for example warranty direct data. Unfortunately, its UK data and obviously new cars aren't listed.
96-01 Civic has a reliability index of 26.3
07-04 Golf has a reliability index of 88.4
That means while a Civic is much more reliable a Golf is still quite a bit more reliable than the average car (index of 112). Overall, the VW brand is quite similar to Lexus in terms of reliability.
VWs and Audis are not as bad as some people make them out to be, IMO they have a few more small problems the say Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus. I know some of you are going to bring up how your Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus has so many problems, I am talking averages. As someone stated there are lemons in avery make and model.

back when I still worked in car rentals, we had a pretty decent selection of VW's... (at the time, we had model year '08s) a bunch of jettas, some rabbits and passats, and a few beetles.
they were no more finicky than any other car maker, about on par with chevy.

VAG makes the greatest cars in the history of mankind. Some day all will bow at the Altar of Wolfsburg.
