Quote me on this Jay: If VW brings the GTI-R for 33k, I'm buying one. Period.
You were going to buy a 135i too, and we all know how that turned out!

i work at a vw dealer now... and with the exception of seemly the 06 passat... and the MK4 and older jettas/golfs... these cars are good!
I had a 2002 Jetta MKIV...worst car I've ever owned. Hopefully they're better now, guess they couldn't be any worse

Vag? No, the Vag is not reliable; it can be very temperamental.

They usually seem to be out of commission one week out of every month.

^ And if you're not careful of the oil deposits, it could give you an unexpected, life-changing situation.

Every VW I've seen, old and new is plagued with weird problems from spontaneously bursting into flames (I've seen 3) to windows just dropping out of their tracks due to the plastic holders breaking. But the biggest thing is that I have yet to see a VW that doesn't have gremlins in the electrical system that the dealers can't locate or fix.

They'll start and run fine for a while then for a while nothing you can do will get them to start and many times after you do get them to run there are phantom CELs that don't have a code that corresponds to any known part. Replacing full harnesses and sub harnesses seems to be a way of life.

My daughter's AC simply won't work unless it wants to and no one can find the problem.

Everyone I know or have known who has a VW has sworn never to buy another.

When I was thinking about an 08 R32 I test drove one at one of our local VW dealerships. There were no salesmen available that night so the finance manager took me out for a test drive. We struck up a conversation and I explained my concerns regarding quality. He said that prior to moving to finance he'd been a salesman for 10 years. He admitted that the quality in the past was suspect as he said the service department was constantly dealing with issues. For what it's worth he said at least on an anecdotal basis that there is a noticeable improvement.

I quite liked my Passat it was a good car, and I'd buy one again. On the other hand, I don't think it's possible to put into words the loathing I have for VW dealers, and in that I do not think I am alone. The kicker? The VW dealer bought the Mazda dealer. So now I have to go to the damn VW dealer or drive 50 miles. Fortunately, the warranty is almost expired so I'll have no reason to go to the incompetent $tealer soon.
