Default What to do?

Hey guys I have a 1999 honda civic EX. I've done a lot of cosmetic work to it, including a sound and dvd system, body kit, along with air ride (not hydraulics). My car recently got broken into and everything was stolen. My insurance company is going to fork over about $1500, and I'm tired of having a ricer. I want to add a little pick up, turn heads ya know?

I've read a lot of posts on this site and most people seem to be pretty knowledgeable. I currently have the inline 4 SOHC non-vtec 110 hp motor. I've read on multiple sites that people actually do turbo their D16/17's, I never though it to be a good idea. I planned on switching to the 210 HP b18c type R engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_B...C_.28Type_R.29).

Reliability is also an issue, my civic is my DD and if I blow the motor I will be in a pickle.

So, should I go with an engine swap to a b18c type R engine, or boost the engine I currently have (I would replace internals in the current engine before boosting).

A good friend of mine has a turbo D16 civic. I think MY95? It makes 253hp at the wheels on 13 psi. The motor also has over 214,000 miles.

Thanks for the responses. Glad I asked, I was leaning towards the b18c swap but that would cost a lot more than simply turboing the current motor.

His engine isn't stock is it? 13 psi on a stock D16 sounds like a blown motor might be coming. I've been told 9 psi is what you should run a turbo on a stock D16, but that's just what I've heard, doesn't make it right.

They didn't get the chance to steal my air ride =P
They took the $35 dollar 12psi compressor, but they couldn't figure out how to get the air tank out due to the fact i have it bolted into the car.

The $1500 is minus labor cost for installing all of the components. Silly insurance company doesn't know I would install it all myself as opposed to paying a shop to do it.

EDIT: What are you reasons for saying the type R is the better choice?

First off it doesn't seem like you have much to spend on. Second, if this car has already been a theft target and is your DD, why would you continue to dump money into it. They probably already watch you like a hawk and would steal whatever else you put into it.

Second, why are you doing this to a civic? Yes you can turbo the damn thing to a billion horsepower, but without the "intangibles" I wouldn't even consider doing this to the base model, why?

1. I would want rims, not hubcaps
2. 4 wheel disc brakes would be nice, not two drum in the back
3. Speaking of braking systems, a bigger brake master cylinder would be nice along with bigger rotors, better pads, fluids... etc. for stopping the 200+ hp machine

4. I would want to stiff the hell out of it, and that body isn't the lightest to toy around with for ultimate FWD gains. Hatches, CRX's are better...

5. If you do turbo it, unless you do some major tuning its not that much faster than a stock GSR/Civic SI/K series, and that tranny can't hold the abuse.

First off, I'm part of a car team, I have rims

This is why I came to this forum and asked for advice as opposed another one. I don't have 12 year olds screaming in my face "LAWL YOU HAVE A CIVIC"

The more research I do on the b18c type R the more I seem to lean towards it, it's just a bit pricey.

I have a garage for my car and 99% of the time it is in the garage (unless parked at school/work). I live in a suburb of Columbus Ohio where cars don't normally get broken into. I was at the parents house for the night and parked it at the end of the driveway.

I don't see why it isn't logical to put money back into the car? Just because it got broken into before doesn't mean it will happen again.

EDIT: With your theory; if somebody wrecks a car they might as well not get another one because there's a 100% chance it will happen again? I don't see the logic in that.

the best part about civics is that there are so many people out there with projects that they never finished so you can get slightly used or pre purchased parts that never found there way onto a car.

i would buy a clutch masters clutch, a decent turbo kit, and obd1 conversion harness, a used hondata system, some bigger injectors and you are good to go.

you can upgrade your front brakes with gsr rotors and calipers which can be purchased from autozone as a refab unit (the calipers) for less than 150 bucks for the whole setup.

put the turbo kit on and get it professionally tuned and you can easily make 230 plus whp which will make it quite fast. considerably faster than the type r swap. go to honda-tech and you will find dozens and dozens of people who have done this.
