Default What do you think?

For a couple months i've been researching as much as I can, on spare time, about sport bikes.

I'm down to a close discision.

At a local dealer, i've gained interest in a used 2007 CBR 600RR going for $8800.
Mind you this is just its sticker price. Not alot of information was discussed in the short time I had while talking with the dealer.

My supervisor is selling his 2005 GSXR 1000.
Always garaged, 3K miles very decent condition.
He's looking for around $7200.

I talked with my supervisor and (I have no idea about motorcycle value)
he is baffled by the CBR's price tag. Told me its quite high.
Suggested the dealer figured im young and afraid of the bigger engines of the 750 up.
For some reason bringing the price of a 600 up to take advantage of a situation.

New, the 600's go for about a grand or two more.
Dumbest decision would be a grand shy of a new CBR and buying a used one.

Which brings me to the GSXR.
In 05' I believe went for 11K new, close to same as 07-08 models

Honestly, I halted (mental deciding) any movement toward a motorcycle.
Pending insurance quotes for a 20 Y/O on a sportsbike wont murder me before I actually get on one.

I havn't quite expanded my decisions to other companies and models yet.
It's winter and im getting sick of it, so im looking for a little spring and summer freedom to look forward to.

Im not looking for a stunt bike, a turbo'd monster, a nitro monster or a track exclusive bike. A 1000cc is crazy and 600cc is pushing it, but the price difference is immense.

What would be the better bike to shoot for?

Forget both and get an r6 haha.

It sounds to me you are just looking at price. Have you decided which bike you like better?

Every bike rides different.

My personal opinion of riding all 3 is that the Gsxr feels cheap and pig-like (too wide), the cbr is nice and better IMO but feels too light like it wants to tip over (not a bad thing, I think it had to do with his tires) and my r6 which I personally feel to be the best for me.

The cbr's price is up there a bit, and the gsxr's price seems resonable. Why don't you tell the dealer you are looking at this other bike for 7200 "with less miles" and see what they can do for you.

LOL, suprizingly I never had thought about pulling the "I found one cheaper" bit.

It's a little too early in the year to buy though, it'd just sit for a few months like the S is.
Although, it would be nice to see how low I can pull on the guy.
I honestly cant say which I like better as far as ride/comfort in long drives/mileage/feel overall. I'd be looking at partially DD to and from work during season.

Price is a big deal for me. I can't help but to look at price of new vs used for a previous year or even years.
When a used 600RR is just a grand or 2 less then a next year new, which would you personally take as the next "factor"?
Then again, the GSXR might prove too much to handle sooner then expected.
A nice Ninja 250 might suffice.

Don't know if this will be any help, but it is a point of reference for you.

I purchased an '04 Honda VFR800 with 600 miles on it for $5000 in November. It stickered at $10,500 new. Deals are out there if you are patient and willing to travel for it.

Get the Ninja 250.

Heh. I can't believe people ask "Should I get a GSXR 1000?" That goes double when you know nothing about bikes.

But hey, you might save some money, right?

i take it this is not your first bike, if it is... then O M G

forget about the price for 1 sec... 600s and 1000s are a different experience - i had a friend go from a R1 to a F6, and he says that he likes the R6 more, because it is more tossable/flickable
i know PLENTY of guys with 600s who can afford/handle 1000s... they prefer the 600s

if you want to pop 100mph stand-up power-wheelies then the 1k Gixer will be better, if you want to do precise canyon-carving, then a 600 may feel lighter and more suitable

but, yeah the 1000 seems like a better deal, the biggest change through the years is the styling, so in getting the newest bike you may not benefit that much

I know I'm not suppose to assume, but I think this will be his first bike. It just hard to imagine current or previous owner would ask question like this. So like most of you guys "OMFG, LITER BIKE ALREADY?" lol, but it up to you, it your money. A used 07 RR for $8,800 when you can get a 08 for msrp which is $9,400 out the door depending on color. Never ever pay more than the msrp.

My notion toward insurance should have thrown some flags on my situation.
Havn't owned a bike and im well aware of the dangers and what not EVERYONE stresses.

But you cant let people tell you how to ride. Being that I dont know anyone with a bike and really not that many people in general, driving alone is prabably the best way to learn on any cc.

Last thing you need is the "pack" questioning your abilities when your learning.
No one can question and test you if your out there alone and just for the ride.

I'd like to explain myself further but i'd probably make it sound like something you'd expect to hear from a kid making a "promise" to his/her parents for something and how they'll take care of it and what not.

Absolutely correct on first bike of ownership, a few hours of seat time makes no real experience.

Anywho, quotes are in.
First round of quotes was like this X 20, well aware of the "at risk" age.
Next round from where my S is insured got me as far as they could without a vin.
Here are the results:

2005 GSXR 1000 im quoted at 1332 (premium) 12mo. full coverage.
2007 CBR 600RR quoted at 840 (premium) 12mo. full coverage.
For that R6 posted above.
2008 YZF-R6S quoted at 1900 (premium) 12mo. full coverage.

All extremely lower then what quotes I recieved at other companies, would rape me at 2000-3100 12mo. premium full coverage.

Ill repeat that I havn't purchased nor extremely interested to the point of ignorance and stubborness avoidance of logic in the situation.

I do plan on making a purchase this year though.

You'll be fine on the 600cc, good luck on your purchase. It your money so don't let me or anyone else tell you how to spend it. I hope you ask around and call multiple dealers before purchase or post up here. Like I said don't pay more then msrp.

Hey, you do what you need to do. I stopped giving advice after the first "Get a beginner's bike" to people in your position a long time ago. I don't care about you or anyone else that isn't close to me, so I'm not going to do more than just the simple "Learn to ride" post. It's your decision. My heart won't bleed no matter what happens to you.
