The STi engine would be easier and more inexpensive to get power out of.

The Inexpensive Way:
Up- Pipe
Down Pipe
Axle Back Exhaust
Re-flash

The More Expensive (Yet, Still Inexpensive) Way:
Bolt On Turbo Kit (Upgrade)
Axle Back Exhaust
Fuel Injectors
EMS

The more expensive route might run a bit more than $2000, but not much.

Not to mention, an STi engine is a hell of a lot cheaper to replace than any BMW motor.

You could always do an 08 viper 50-60whp with just header and exhaust!
Can someone enlighten me? How do Vipers and Corvettes get so much power out of such basic mods? Two reasons I can think of are 1) the cars were not optimally designed (unlikely given their impressive statistics) 2) they respond well to mods (what does this actually mean??)

Thanks!

From what I hear for power/$, Evo IX >> '08 STi > 335i

Oh

1) what about the rest of the package. Do STi have strong enough differentials, tranny etc. to handle power.

2) can power be added so that it's feels natural, I mean little or no lag. I guess some mods have different turbos what does that mean? Are they bigger turbos? Does that mean more turbo lag?

I am thinking about a GTR or M3 and know a STi is a long way from that, but costs half the price and would be able to drive 365 days and saved $ can go towards a sports car such as Cayman S (at a later date)

1. The Differential is plenty strong. The Transmission might be a weak point depending on what kind of power you are going to be throwing down, though that's usually nothing to worry about.

2. Yes, power can be added so that the car feels somewhat responsive like Factory.

Example:
STi Pink Injectors
Up- Pipe
Down Pipe
VF34
Cobb Access Port

They aren't wrung out from the factory. They aren't making evey bit of HP possible for emissions and warranty reasons. They don't really need to as 435 or 505 or 600 HP is enough, but if you want more it's there for the taking. It's one of the reasons the Viper is such a great track car. It makes a ton of HP. It's fast as hell. And that huge 8.4 liter lump isn't working all that hard to to do it. It's reliable and has a ton of grunt for getting you out of corners.

edit: This is sort of OT as the original comment about the viper was a joke. I was just reading about the car and watching the dyno videos and thought I would add a joke. No more viper, vette talk.

[QUOTE=brockLT1,Dec 15 2007, 03:21 PM] the 335I actually makes 350HP, as it dyno's around 300 to the wheels.

Man I wished I didn't buy the S2000 and bought a 335i instead.
