So this link talks about an outfit that is going to produce what amounts to drop in electric "crate motors" for people that want to do hot rod conversions.

The part I found interesting is they make them to bolt up to manual transmissions.

I think it would be fun to drop the 240hp unit into something like an old MR2 or similar.

The only experience I have is from the early 90's in votech :P We used a kit to turn an old Dodge D50 into an electric truck. Bed full o lead acid batteries and all Was a fun project though. These guys are probably onto something seeing as how things are moving heavilly toward electric. I still feel that (Assuming the fueling options hurdle can be overcome) a hyrdrogen fuel cell is still a better automobile option, but even with that these kits would still be applicable as you are still running an electric drivetrain.

Our project back in school was using the stock gearbox. The only issue though was that you could put it into too high of a gear and destroy the motor control due to overheating it. Small engine repair instructor did that when trying to load it into a trailer and had it in 3rd instead of 1st. Kept trying to get it going until the motor controller literally blew up under the hood. But more modern systems can avoid that and with the better motors today the tq would probably be sufficient for any gear. But, at the same time, a single speed transmission would work just as well most likely.

Never on an S2000, that would be blasphemous in every sense of the term.. Do it on a Civic, or an Accord or Camry, just not a S2000.

Would be neat to convert a 90's Bentley or Rolls to electric. Those cars are cheap to buy, especially if it needs engine work.

That is kind of a cool idea. Except when you are done it would weigh 64 tons. If you could put enough batteries in empty spaces to move the already heavy car without making it too heavy to get out of its own way.

For me the appeal is find a rolling chasis of something from the 80's or 90's and keep it rolling with a powertrain that is quicker than what it came with and still be able to keep it a manual transmission.

I am sure this will get used in a Wheeler Dealers episode.
