People act like a GTI will explode on you the second the warranty expires. Most enthusiasts will not have a problem. It's the idiots (general public) that forget to do preventative maintenance; etc, that are most affected. Ive maintained all of my family's german cars and never had any major issues except on our one American car (tranny) & my s2000 (ABS modulator failure). & the e46 325 whose window regulators stopped working after 130k miles but only cost $250 to replace (after 8 years)

Coming into this thread I was expecting the Si to by the favorite by a landslide considering this is a Honda forum. I was surprised to see that the poll was evenly split. I voted for the Civic primarily due to Honda's renowned reliability. I'm sure the GTI is a fun car, but I question VW's reliability.

My friend has a full bolt on, tuned 09 si, my other friend has an mk5 gti with stage 1 tune and full exhaust. It flies, destroys the civic, his has over 100,000 miles and he hasn't has any major repairs, just simple maintenance. It has way more room and a far better interior IMO, doesn't have lsd which sucks but that's fixable. I personally hate the new si's with a passion but the gti does everything the si does, just better. Aside from the ultra high reliability of the si, but like I mentioned, it's not like the gti is crap when it comes to reliability. It's very good. Gti

GTI all the way. Maybe I would reconsider if the Si was available as a hatch, but probably not. The VW's power train, handling, and utility blows the Civic away. And don't forget 2 years all service paid for (I think it's just 2 yrs, maybe 3?). And if you're so concerned with reliability then buy an extended warranty. Probably won't need it though.

3 year 36k. Good point on that tho. 3 years no maintenance pays for a decent amount of repairs.

Honda has lost their marbles with styling on the Civic.

New for new, despite my perception on VWs in general, I'd get the GTI. I this were to be a primary car with something like the S in the garage, then SI. The GTI is the better car, people who are saying that the civic is screwed together better is just not informed, the GTI interior is on par with the civic, and I prefer the restrained styling in it, and with leather it's not even close. I also prefer the overall look of the GTI and feel it will age better. Another interesting tidbit, GTI's resale values are good too, at least around here.
But if I was looking in that segment, I'd go with FRS. If I wanted a fwd turbo, the ford.
