If she's choosing ONLY between those two (kind of a limiting factor, but it's your Mom's choice), then it depends on the specific model you choose. If she goes balls-out and wants to pay for top-end stuff, then it's X5 4.6, no choice.

Otherwise... is she definitely hung up on luxury yuppie-utes? (Sorry, that's just my opinion. ) If so, also consider the Acura MDX. It did win SUV of the year for 2001, so that has to count for something.... All those drivers can't be wrong.

Or... if she wants to save money but have the same car with the same quality, wait for the Honda Pilot to come out. C'mon, this is a Honda board, you really didn't think I'd NOT mention it, did you? The Pilot will be the Honda version of the MDX.

Therefore... cheaper to buy, cheaper maintenance (although Acura does have some pretty cool warrantee coverages and stuff) due to a non-luxury nameplate, and people won't think she's as much of a yuppie.

Heh.

i like the MDX.
ML500 style is porky.
X5 looks aggressive, but it has lot of small little problems which i know older people don't like dealing with, actually no one does.

i think you and your mom should go out and test drive these vehicles at least 2x each. that's the only way to find out what she really wants, to try the cars. good luck and it's nice to see you are helping your mom find a nice car.

what about the new range rover. if your mom wants luxury, and rugged looks, the new Range rover would be perfect. its in her price range, and has some utility to it(unlike the x5).

sorry ice, i forgot about your comments on pg. 1 and the pics. I sat in the new RR at the Houston auto show- it is really nice on the inside, and mid size on the outside. the BMW 4.4l V-8 makes it the best luxury suv regardless of price!- imho. and atleast you get the prestige of driving a REAL SUV with heritage.

No problem, MDXLuvr.
There's a X5 that'll really blow you away: 4.6 is. I'm surprised there's no M badge on it.
Anyway the Range Rover also comes with a 4.4 engine and I think BMW helped Land Rover too well with creating a new Range Rover, BMW might regret they ever sold Land Rover to Ford.

I think all M division cars must have a manual tranny as standard equipment. this is not the case with the 4.6 and therefore it is not referred to as a M vehicle. besides- you can't call it a M5- that is already taken.
