X5 has less cargo space than 5 series wagon but X5 4.6 is faster than AMG ML55.

My top picks for SUV are either Mercedes G500 or the new Range Rover, but I think that Audi Allroad Quattro would be more practical.

Do SUVs have a higher risk of rolling?

The X5, ML, and MDX are all SUVs designed after having things like an independent rear suspension were considered useful. They all have lower centers of gravity and perform well in safety tests. I would have to question buying a 4Runner at this point in time as the design is old and is due for a complete overall. For a cheap alternative (if you can get it real cheap) it might not be bad. Keep in mind it will perform better offroad, but 9 out of 10 people will never this aspect to the extent that it makes a difference. I take my Navigator offroading, and it is limited in what it can do, but it is much better on the road, where I am most the time.

The best bargain right now is the MDX which is in high demand in my area (waiting list). The best looking and most sportscar like is the X5. The ML has a touring/truck feel plus the "Hey look! I have a Mercedes!" appeal if you are into it.

I agree with DJRobNM. My father actually got the X5 and absolutely loves it. But he wanted a sportier ride, and responsiveness. If it's for your mom the ML has a nicer interior, and a more plush (i.e. softer more compliant) ride that might be better. It also has more trunk space if that is a consideration. We looked at the MDX also but the Acura dealer said no test drives, that we had to put a deposit down and if we did not like it he would give us our deposit back. It was too limited to have us test drive so that was a no go. Overall the interior of the X5 is very BMW (very similar to the 3 series) in that it is very business like, very efficient. The Acura MDX (we at least got to sit in one that had just arrived) was very typical Honda (very similar to my brother's Accord). Good luck.

before u set u decide on the X5(its smaller than the CRV), or the ML(the queen of recalls) make sure u check out the MDX. obviously i am biased, but IMHO its the best overall package. It might not win stop light races like the x5 4.6 or the ML55, but its plenty quick, has lots of room, very comfortable, and reliable(unlike the bmw or the MB). check out acuramdx.org for detailed comparisons between the mdx and the x5 or the ml. other sites to u might want to check out include mbnz.org

good luck!

Does the X5 have a hard steering wheel? I had a 328is and my mom hated driving my car, she said it had a harsh ride. Too sporty for her taste. Is the X5 like that too?

As a person that will hopefully NEVER own a SUV, minivan, or stationwagon, I'd suggest taking a real hard look at the MDX. . .

One of my best friends (a huge BMW fan that already owns a 3 series sedan) opted for the MDX over the X5 for his wife, and he doesn't have any regrets.

Besides saving a nice amount of cash, he probably got the best small SUV currently on the market. . .

Just something to think about. . .

I'd prefer the X5.
ML looks and feels like an outdated vehicle comparing with the X5.
How about the new Range Rover, it has very promising test reports. On tarmac not as good as the X5, but better than the ML and off road it's way better than the rest.
