I had a golf 01 tdi and got 37mpg 60/40 hwy/cty driving. had electrical problems but none major. Gave it up for the main reason of having to deal with the fumes getting in the car.

My wife's Golf TDI get 32 to 33 mpg all the time. That car sees about 95% city driving. We topped out 42 mpg on a trip to Toronto with my leadfoot driving all the way. 
It's an A/T in case you are wondering.
BTW, it has more torque @ 1800 RPM than the S2000 at peak.
