why is the 911 regarded so highly

The short answer is: look at 10-15 year old 911 and a 10-15 year old Vette and you immediately see why the Porsche is all it is cracked up to be. The Porsche is much more of an investment worthy car. You buy it once and can keep it forever; it drives great, looks timeless, and doesn't fall apart...

they are highly intrinsically flawed cars that have compensatory engineering and mythical reverence, in an industry of mediocre cars
new GT3 looks very cool....from the outside...
Cayman S: no top end, power understeer, no room for your left foot,
wake me up for the turbo model with LSD....ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Vic Elford made an announcement today at Porsche Parade in Portland, Oregon. After 40 years of driving 911's his favorite car was no longer the 911, his favorite car is now the Cayman S!!! Many people at parade were floored by Vic's comments. Vic was, afterall, the person who taught many others how to drive the 911 fast. Vic is a Porsche icon.

Now, maybe that's just us Porsche moldy fig purists talking, but it is believed that like Mercedes, Porsches are no longer overengineered for the long haul. I'd still love a new 987 or 997, but I don't think I'd want a 10 year old example of either; I do, however, lust for a 1987 Turbo or Carrera coupe.

I have to agree with him. If Porsche put LSD and the 3.8L motor in the Cayman the only 911 Coupe worth buying would be the Turbo.

Not that one race event is the definitive answer to this question, but I do find it interesting that at least at this event, the Porsche GT-2 just couldn't compete...

Perhaps it was the driver, the crew or the tuner that was the difference.
By the way, I used to own a Porsche, and I enjoyed it, but in many ways, I enjoy my S2K much more.
