For me the points are deterrent enough.
I'd happily pay a hell of a lot more and not take the three points if that was an option.
The points themselves cost a shitload in insurance anyway, so the fine is irrelevant.

I think the fine should be larger with no points much like a parking ticket unless the margin is classed as dangerous.

That's how it works in France. If you're really naughty they lock you up and you have a court appearance the next morning. They can also confiscate and crush your car.

Otherwise its an on the spot fine.

Funny how other countries can get it right but the morons here just want to rape you and then open the flood gates for every other highway robber to jump on the bandwagon

Half you license is gone....

inform your insurance company of the points and see if you have learnt your lessson then.... 3 points wont do much to a policy however 6 points put it up quite a bit for me....

I'd prefer a means tested option. Points + fine to cover admin or a week or more wages

Not really. It still works just fine.

If the financial penalty is small, it's effectively giving you three lives in three years before they prosecute you. Nobody would think it was okay to have three free murders before you were prosecuted.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but if you reach the 12 points the disqualification is usually only a small one (unless it's reckess driving, or 150mph or something daft). You don't get disqualified until the points come off after 3 years.
