I was following a Mk4 GTI doing 30 through a 40 the other day. I was close behind, but not enough to be really tailgating (if he slammed on his brakes I'd probably stop before he did anyway).

Got to NSL which opens out onto straight bit of road, I'm in fourth about to drop to third to overtake, I see him lurch as he changes down to first or second, and he takes it up to about 90. He then dropped to 30 and below again when the road hit 40 a mile or so later.

Even so remember the speed limit is a maximum, not a minimum

Completely agree most of the time, however it's one of those roads which was a national that was dropped to 40 because blue-rinse NIMBY residents (the kind who buy fake speed guns and stand outside to scare drivers) complained that the B-road they moved next door to is too noisy, and are now trying to lower it further to a 30.

They're not hugely popular.

The ability to get the f uck outta there should not be underestimated.

In a small car or a commercial, one must approach any situation carrying far more speed than the dawdlers, in order to drive around them.

A powerful car reduces the need for such judgment.

If the middle lane is empty and it is safe to move into it it doesn't take a great deal of effort to do so and it helps make it easier for the person trying to join the road.

The person joining the road is , as has already been mentioned, because of the design of most slip roads, is at a disadvantage. They are having to accelerate up to match the speed of the traffic on the road they are attempting to join. (Not everyone enjoys the performance we do). They have a reduced angle of vision and a reduced amount of road space in which to do all this. They have two lanes (the short slip road and the lane they are attempting to join) the driver on the main carriageway has a choice off potentially three or sometimes more lanes they could use to allow the person joining the carriageway, room to do so.

Personally I don't have a problem moving over for a car or cars joining and on the rare occasion that I'm in the near side lane I will anticipate having to do so well before I get to the junction.
Having a little courtesy for other road users and accepting that there are less experience/more nervous drivers around makes driving more pleasurable. NOT playing games with other vehicles and creating potentially life threatening situations that could so easily be avoided. :climbsoffsoapbox:

too.

The thing that annoys me is that I will always pull into lane 2 in this situation if it is safe to do so; however, on the occasions when it isn't sometimes the muppet on the slip road has expected me to either stop, disappear or move over anyway and has been known to give abuse if one of these courses of action is not taken...

Some slip roads aren't slip roads neither. God knows what you do in a car with a 0-60 into next week.

Try the M6 North Knutsord services for example, or one of the entries onto the Mancunian way (forget which one)
