Default Anyone with experience of the A4 cab?

Vicks wants to spend up to about 10k, and wants a 2005/6 A4 cab with 50-60k on it.

It's ages since I've had any proper vag involvement (stop sniggering at the back). Anybody got any pointers? All I remember is that the early A4 cabs were to be avoided, and that the 2.5TDi is a fantastic engine until it (inevitably) brakes...something to do with the cambelt I *think*??

The A4 diesel of all varieties is unbelievably noisy, not good when you're cruising around with the roof down. Petrol all the way and you'll probably get more car for your money.

Lots of lovely 2.4 or 3.0 petrols for that money/mileage. There's a 3.2 from '06 there with 67k miles.

Fuel may be an issue of course...

I've got no experience with the cabriolet, but I've got an A4 Avant with the 2.0 T FSI, and can thoroughly recommend that engine (it's the same one as in the Golf GTI I think). 200hp, pulls very well, returns 37mpg on a motorway cruise. Above 2.5k revs there is a definite turbo kick which is good fun!

If the Cabriolet is like the Avant, it is definitely worth getting the S-Line trim - the bigger wheels and stiffer suspension make it much nicer to drive "enthusiastically"...! Look out as well for the S-Line "Special Editions" from that era, which had bigger cross drilled front brakes and the 2.0T engine chipped to 220hp.

Not a cab, but my F-I-L has the 2.5 diesel saloon - 140,000 miles on the clock and no problems.

FWD though, so usual Audi dull vague steering with sloppy gearbox.

Is she anti-BMW? If not worth looking at the 3 series cab too. BMW diesels seem quite quiet.

A friend bought a 2005 A4 cab 3.0 V6, lovely car but........

No end of troubles with it, it spent more time in the Audi garage having constant problems fixed from a leaky roof to a dodgy sat nav system, none were cheap fixes either. Final nail in the coffin was when the plates in the auto gearbox wore out and caused lumpy changes. Apparently this affects Jags/BMW's and Audi's of this era and a later gearbox modification was introduced of uprated additional plates.

He got so fed up with it he offloaded it to a dealership and part exchanged it for a newer E46 cab.

If i were you i'd avoid one like the plague.
