The best engine sound?

And then there is the Avon powered English Electric Lightnings on re-heat take-off, a squadron of them doing a formation take-off once at Farnborough.
Terrific, even if health and safety wouldn't allow it now
More recently a mate fired up up his Monaro in a car before a recent run, and set of the alarms in the cars next to him.
I followed him for two days and gave up trying to hear the stereo.

I'm linked out! Thanks. Something to look forward to tomorrow.
Just watched Blurter's Ferrari 250LM link and it was almost a religious experience. Loved the first part best, what with that awesome music, the countryside, and the scarf fluttering Isadora Duncan style. The shot of the drivers swigging Champagne en route brought back memories of less regulated times before 'elf and safety. Reminds me of returning from a party in the early hours one summer morning as the sun was coming up doing a similar thing in our TR4, me at the wheel and my husband standing up drinking. Not big, not clever but fun.
Goes downhill a bit from 1964 when the girl with the knobbly knees appears. Interesting that she is wearing a tulip skirt which is hot for this season.
The Red Arrows are hard to beat for aural pleasure.

I posted about the legendary BRM V16 GP car of the fifties on this thread a while back, but I still think it makes the most awesome sky rending sound.

The sound clip on that thread is taken from a CD that came out with a book showcasing Nick Mason's car collection. The BRM was recorded doing laps at Donington. You've got to remember it's only a 1.5 litre engine (albeit with 16 cylinders) and its alcohol fuel kept freezing in the carbs, hence the stuttering on the straights. Allegedly one of the loudest racing engines ever. One of the downshifts into McLeans is amazing ...

Best road car engine I ever heard was a Ferrari 365GT4BB from the passenger seat
NSX was also very good but not quite in the same league
For race cars, the V12 Ferrari F1 in anger was pretty special from the Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger days
Worst sounding sports car engine is without a doubt the Toyota lump in the Elise 111R IMO

1. Ferrari Static. (Got to be moving.)
2. Renault Static " "
3. Skyline Soprano (Too high pitched)
4. Peri Port Static (Agricultural)
5. Camaro Strange
6. Audi Quattro Slithering
7. Ferrari F 40 Screaming (and stuttering)
8. Supra Smokin'
I liked the F40 best out of the 8. It would be great if you could find an AC Cobra. I really prefer the lower engine notes, am fond of the sound of TVRs.
