They'll continue in one form another. There were several more teams wanting entries, and taking over an existing team with existing equipment and personnel has got to be a lot easier than starting afresh.

I wonder if they'll do a deal with arch-rival Mercedes for an engine?

Yikes, pretty soon F1 will become a one engine championship? What a sordid thought!
Well, Honda dominated F1 with Prost and Senna, then left for a few years, and realized that losing so much technology ground and racing experience cannot be overcome. BMW has now been through that same experience - they were in F1 before, left for a while and came back to find out they had lost too much ground.

The thing is does anyone actually believe F1 is beneficial to the sale of Road cars?

I mean i'd be amazed if 1% of technology/development of running an F1 team was put into road cars

2.6 litre V8s with pnuematic valvetrains and 18krpm.

Every other car aren't they?

really or was that sarcasm?

Mad thing is BMW pumped all that money in to Rover, Mini and Land Rover and then suddenly wanted out. Admittedly Rover was in a bad way, but I honestly think the brand was on the way up with the 75, the new Range Rover was in final development with the Discovery not far behind.

Oh well they've made their decision and I am sure their F1 costs / budget will soon be re-assigned to another new niche model in the brand portfolio
I believe at one stage the FIA had over 10 requests for new teams for the 2010 season

Lotus
ProDrive
USF1
Lola
To name just a few.

It wouldn't surprise me if BMW were getting fed up with the endless rule changes. By all accounts next year there will not be any refuelling. About sodding time. Everyone starts with the fuel they need to finish the race on. There will only be tyre changes

At one time a lot of the innovation from F1 did make it into road cars. Variable Valve Timing, Anti-lock Brakes, Traction Control to name a few. Also, I am sure that a lot of aerodynamics came from F1 into road cars. Not sure if that happens anymore - it seems to me the only innovation happening in F1 at the moment is in finding a way to bend the rules (or break them) to gain an advantage over others.

None of those came from F1

First two came from Aircraft (yes yes, steam engines I know), 3rd was in road cars before F1.

Paddle shift gearbox?

Carbon ceramic brakes?

The use of carbon fibre as a body material?

And IIRC Ferrari are developing a KERS system for their road cars at the moment.
