You can check the stat easily, start the car and put your hand on the top hose, if it remains cold for some time and then suddenly gets hot that's the stat working and opening to release hot water into the rad, if, on the other hand the hose gradually gets warm from start up the stat is stuck open.

Well had a mare of a day with this!

Went to GMF motor factors, picked up the stat, drove 30 miles to my parents house.

Took all the bolts etc of which took friggin ages to find out, wrong stat!

Drove all around trying to find the right one but no one keeps them in stock!

couldnt get hold of GMF, so hopefully they are open tomorrow and i can take the wrong one back, and swap for the correct one. Really ****ed off as this is a 70 mile trip now!

What year Celica?

If it's an ST202 it'll be an airlock. Quite common on the 3s-GE engine.

Did you boil the old stat to check it was broke?

Its a L reg (93?) import,

but apparently it has the 95 engine (wether the imports had these before the uk variants i dont know), so a different stat to the one they gave me.

The stat was stuck open when we took it out, tried the cold water boil and nothing happened.

So the old pop up headlight one? ST182.

The engine changed with the ST205 to the 3rd generation. And yeah, the stat propably did change as it was a big revision.

To confirm have a look here :

If you can still read the part no. off the old stat, you may find it fits somewhere else, too - not just Toyota.

Might widen your choices.
