Confession Time - MK3 MX5?
Going back a good few years, my wife had a Mk1 Mx5. I had a MR2 turbo at the time.
The MR2 was much much faster, but the MX5 was just fun to drive at almost any speed. It felt chuckable, nimble and alive even though it was relatively underpowered.
Unfortunately the image of the car was such that i felt my wrists getting weaker and weaker every time i even approached her car

If / when the cost of motoring finally drives me to get rid of the S2000 .... it will be most likely be replaced with a Mk1 MX5 - for < £1000 I don't think there's much else to beat them for roof down RWD motoring fun.
My dad had an early 1990 1.6 in White and a later 1995 1.8 in BRG and both were a royal hoot to thrash.
Given the state of the roads etc etc blah blah it is going to come down to what is fun ... as opposed to what is fast - fast will be something only able to be appreciated on a track.

I wouldn't go back to owning a mark 1 MX-5 if you gave it to me! I've had 2 of them (1with a turbo) and I've had a mark 2.5. The 2 litre Sport Black beats them all for power and handling. AND I wouldn't give up my S2k for any of them!
