Congratulations to BMW
The leasing rates also makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy.
It's an obvious choice.
Those pseudo-petrolheads can only discern by badge (most dunno if it's FWD or not) and so bingo. They probably also don't realise Mr Clarkson is only playing the fool...

I think it appeals to people for various reasons.
BMW are known to be solid reliable cars, who wouldn’t want that.
So, for every twat who wants a bling beemer there’s a sensible person who considers a BMW to be a reliable and sensible choice of car.
It’s an entry level BMW.
Some people might aspire to a Beemer for the bling.
But plenty of other just want a good car that’ll start in the mornings, have a comfortable drive, be reliable and if anything does go wrong have a good history of helpful dealers.

The same reason so many admire the S2000
An M car, and all BMWs of course being REAR WHEEL DRIVE means at the worst a pleasant driving experience.
After trying several, and even after protesting that I would never own, I found the whole drive thing was actually excellent and decent fun.
And expensive?
That's a relative term.
And you know what they say about 'Buy Cheap... Buy Twice"
