Car vandalism is one of my pet hates. I've hauled someone into the main road for kicking a mirror from an MX5 and handed him to the police for it. Personally I don't park the nice car anywhere where it's likely to happen, but having had a car vandalised it makes you helplessly angry and the thought of the chance of identifying someone seems fair to me. The RR I'm not fussed about as nobody bothers with them.
It went quite well actually, despite much talk of a custodial sentence. He was actually given an eight-week sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to wear an electronic tag under a curfew for three months. He must also pay £10 a week towards a £180 criminal court charge, £85 prosecution costs, a £80 victim surcharge, and £750 compensation to the car's owner.

He's unemployed. I doubt he has paid a penny and what he has paid has been donated by you and me if he's on benefits. Three years' community service giving up his Saturdays and Sundays would have been far more sensible.

Anyway, I share your dislike of vandals. Unfortunately the state regards it as worthy only of a smack on the wrist. I thinking snapping the wrist would be more appropriate and more likely to deter repeat or copycat offences.

Award the Aston owner some cable ties, a sharpened key and immunity...

i think it's a hate crime

he hates the fact that he cocked his life up so spectacularly he doesn't even have a job

the Aston owner pleaded on his behalf so i guess he feels justice was served. For me there's no excuse for this kind of act other than not being in control of your actions (nutjob, high on whatever) but how do you punish a man who has nothing? Remove his tv maybe and all his booze?

You make him wear a pink jumpsuit and give up his weekends for the next two or three years. Whilst suitably attired he does all the work like litter picking and verge trimming that our councils tell us they can no longer afford to do. Every day he doesn't show up is replaced with a day in custody.

The above approach could halve the prison population overnight, something which is now apparently government policy.

Weird - also agree entirely with that. Custodial / Fines are utterly pointless. The couuncil should have a list of these jobs that it passes to the courts on an ongoing basis. You could even extend it to mandatory attendance for those claiming unemployment benefit otherwise the benefit is removed.
