Diesel to rise to

you buy one because you are made to buy one by your company
you are a tightwad
or you have fallen for the hype
(the first one explains a lot of the dreadful driving we see)
and if you can enjoy a rev limit of 5,000 rpm, well good luck to you
small diesels are even more pointless - small petrol engines are now incredibly efficient

The point that we seem to be missing is that driving enjoyment has very little to do with what fuel you use (although I'll concede a V8 sounds better than a TDi), unless you count clean hands at the pump among one of the prerequisites - I'd expect gadaffi to have staff to that kind of thing, anyway
The real point is how well the chassis brings you around the next corner, not how you're powered around it. As long as you can feel the (lateral or otherwise) acceleration and a bit of sideslip, who cares if it's diesel, petrol, chip fat, sugar cane, battery power or pedal car?

That's one of the elemts for sure, but a diesel with its heavier engine will always feel worse than a petrol equivalent, and driving enjoyment is also about the sounds.
My driving enjoyment is often spoiled by being behind a diesel.

Have you driven an electric car?
Big from me
Diesels simply can't thrill me the way a petrol can
Some of it is the noise, some of it the revs
Hard to quantify
It certainly isn't speed alone - you can have great fun in something like an MG Midget or Spitfire

And don't forget the throttle response; especially crucial with passive 4WS!
(4WS includes the sometimes scatterlogical toe angles in a Spridget or Spitfire, dependent on which version of the rear suspensions they are equipped with, which can also be fun)
