Default Disc / pad life?

Ok, so not S related, other than I am praying the missus brings mine home safely today, after she left the keys for the cooper s with me this morning and the MOT certificate (expires tomorrow) and says can you sort this....(no fuel either by the way)

Anyway, the 52 plate cooper S has been a loyal servant to us and have owned for 3+ years and 30k+ miles including a 2.5k road trip through france (ace!) a few years back.

Anyway, to the point. We have done 30k+ miles in the car and have not yet had cause to change discs and/or pads??? It seemingly flies thorugh MOT's and services with not even a mention of wear?? guy just called to say that they are now wearing, but have 'plently of life in them yet'....

I am amazed, i know its a relatively light car so should be easier on its brakes, but 30K out of a set of pads!?!?!?....shame she can't make the run-flats last as long! I swear i have single handedly paid for the Pirelli annual bonus scheme for the past 3 years!

Was expecting a big bill this year, but for £50 I can pick it up with a fresh ticket!

happy days!

Phil

No worries, moving posts around is the kind of moderating we prefer

60k so far on my Legacy, still a couple of K to go too.

Mostly motorway miles though.

The pads on my S2000 were changed at the 45K service (about that mileage), I saw more than 30K out of the pads on the Jag, and more than 35K on the Golf so far...

I'm not surprised if not tracked and driven properly...

Just had a call from the garage where the Maser is being serviced. I knew I needed new pads but I also need new discs

3mm lip on the inner edge grrr. They rarely see discs last over 30k on Masers or Ferrari's.

I've imported the pads from the US as a bargain. Just need some discs now.
I'll be doing it myself.

Brake pads are a sore point with me and my Mini.

My Clubman (a lowly Cooper version) had new front pads at 32K miles and new rear pads at 43K miles - at a cost of £169.00 and £148.00 respectively. Interestingly the display is telling me I have 30K miles left on the current front pads - giving them a life of 56K miles...

With Minis (and BMWs too I guess) as well as the pads, there is the cost for the sacrificial sensors - and they have to be fitted at the dealer who can reset the ECU to confirm new pads and sensors have been fitted.

In the past 25 years of company car driving I have never, ever had rear pads fitted to a car. I managed 43K from the fronts of my daily driver S some years ago and a massive 75K from the front on my Prius.

In general, disk/pad life = 2 * (length of time dealer thinks they can get away with before telling you you need new ones)

I just changed the Subaru pads (front and rear bizarrely) at about 30-35k miles, which is apparently very good out of the STi pads!

I'm expecting discs in the next 10k miles or so, especially as I put slightly harder pads on.

I don't drive Miss Daisy, but I don't use the brakes a lot either.

On the other hand the 7 has gone through a couple of sets this year and it hasn't done many miles (ok ok they are all track miles including races but it weighs a feather!)
