Usually, if it's a quiet day and you drive properly, the sales guys really don't mind longer than round the block.

An extended test drive is when they hand you the keys and say come back tomorrow. I know people that's happened to, but not me :-(

In the end I had to drive a friends one.

how long do you need?

I've never tested a car for more than hour and that includes some fancy wheels

I can usually tell if it's for me within fifteen minutes if the roads are empty

Most dealers I know, you need to drive for about 20 minutes to get clear of traffic. So a 30 minute one doesn't quite do it. But an hour on the right roads did it.

Exactly; by top gear, one can usually tell whether it's even worth bothering, or not.

It took me longer to drive a Brera back to the dealer, than to work out what a FPOS it was.
