If there's no sign of leakage, it's probably just co-incidence.
My F20 also threw a rod, for no obviously explicably reason and I've heard a few K20s have failed (although it's usually accidental engagement of 2nd gear that might have something to do with most). It may simply have spent too much of a former life bouncing off the rev limiter, or be oil surge on trackdays that weakened something.
The K is essentially a cheaper, productionised version of the F20, so I should expect similar issues will occur.

my 2000 year model threw a rod as well for not apparent reason so not sure you can put that down to error on the part of the garage and think you will have a lot of difficulty in doing so
