Interesting listening to that David Croft interview (on the BBC web page).

BTW practice 1 on at 09:55 for us unemployed types.

The sport has been killed by money, but do you think that a breakaway championship, formed by the big players of F1 will be about racing?
Is it about racing now?

This season with Brawn winning everything has shown what a joke the sport has become, its clear that cars decide the winners and drivers are effectively ballast.

Stick everyone in Formula Fords and watch them duke it out, that would be great.

That's why Button has won all the races and Barichello none?

You are quite right, I think Barichello has had some rough luck and isnt quite as quick as Button but thats the worrying thing - the only way we can realistically compare drivers is to their team mates.

We should be able to look down the grid and be able to compare drivers because the cars are close enough to each other to do so.

Exactly. To some extent the driver counts, but not as much as the strategy and the technology.

Which is why I'm at a loss to see why a breakaway group of the same teams would lead to some renaissance.

But that's true of all motor racing to some degree. Who won LeMans? Was it the great driving of Gene/Brabham/Wurz or was it because they had a Peugot?

Even single make championships like A1GP have the same teams and drivers consistently winning.

Christian Horner just speaking on the BBC, and sounding very downbeat and saying he didn't see either side budging.

I think sportscar racing is a little different. The rules in that are crazy and designed to make cars that are completely different as equal as possible (especially in the lower GT classes).

There are always going to be teams that win consistently in any series but it would be nice to know that it was down to the driver more than it was down to the car.

Most one make championships generally provide this and despite the talk of someone having a slightly better engine etc there is usually no difference between the cars, its about setup and driver.

And who do you think gets the best setup - the individual who is prepared to give the largest backhander to the car maker

Like MarkB, I don't think it'll make a huge difference.

It's however the most exciting thing that's happened in decades in F1 and I really wanna see Burnt Ecclescake and Mosley Brownshirtlifter meet their comeuppance. In a bunker outside Berlin...

Backhanders for setups? Sounds highly unlikely to me.

The car manufacturer in most cases wont have tested the car on the circuits that they end up racing on so im not sure how a better setup can be purchased?
