I don't agree with that.

5th and 6th on a B road is totally exhillerating

Yet the S2000 isn't a fast car, apparently.

It IS exciting, though. If rather tiring...

I was speaking about this with my Dad only yesterday.

We were talking tyres and I mentioned about overheating etc, but that on the road it would never happen.

Purely because his car (Mk2 Escort Harrier) and the S take serious concentration to drive quickly

10 minutes of maximum attack down a dark b-road is utterly exhausting in the S.

If it wasn't, it wouldn't be exciting!

Price i'm willing to pay though

so you DO have to be travelling fast to feel as if you are?

And for the benefit of everyone who didn't know that Pete's question was rhetorical:

Of course. I have tried doing crude experiments regarding this.

Personally, the more I push it, the faster I go, the more the adrenaline hits, and the slower it feels.

This is based on listening to dance music tracks before/after a drive and despite being played on the same device, the after sounds a lot slower.

It's a proper 'Fight or Flight' stimulus and is highly addictive

Going truly fast in a car with amazing composure can be quite breathtaking; although V12 Jaguars and the like still somehow had a sense of occasion, in spite of the refinement.

But it's not what Ron is describing and it gets very tedious after a while. Or incarcerating...

To answer the OP - yes there is a need for a car to be fast.

I can make fast progress when I choose to.

It's nice to have the choice - which, when you break anything down, is what life is all about.

Not much fun on a motorway (although the refinement was superb for its day) but as I remember, great everywhere else!

I wonder how it would fare today? Hardly as useable as a 147, but more thrilling at 65!

for me it's not just about speed although fast cornering is a big part of it.. straight line flat out just doesn't do it for me

i love acceleration, i love cornering, i love the feeling of being in touch with the road, i dont want a car which drives itself.. one of these things they say 'is great a to b' but has no feel.

and i think he's just old. i've got a clean licence and i dont spare the horses in the appropriate circumstances (that doesnt mean "when there's no speed camera")
