I thought Smedley and Massa were quite good mates.
That's always the way Rob comes across, like in 2009 they were asking him about what the team would do and he basically said all that worried him was seeing his mate hurt. In 2010 he sounded genuinely awkward with the team order and radio apology afterwards.

I wish to god Maldonado would end up with no seat but the amount of money he brings, along with having the talent to win a race makes that unlikely.

I think Di Resta is the only likely to wind up in the cold through all this. He's a good driver, very consistent but I've never seen a flash of brilliance from him and I wouldn't want his attitude in a team.
Well said, pretty much nail on the head there ....

I am optimistic that 2014 will be better, but I won't hold my breath.

Apologies if you're in the know, it sounded like another Eddie Jordan "announcement".

Very strange things happening in the driver market. Just reading that Lotus tried to get Schumacher of all people to stand in for Raikonnen. You've really got to feel sorry for "reserve driver" Valsechi - the team seem to be doing everything possible to avoid letting him be the reserve driver.

It's all about the money... And past his best or not, Schuey brings attention.

I do get the impression if it weren't for the need of a super license they'd put David Beckham in that car at the minute for the marketing.

Who's the most famous super license holder without a current seat? Could they get Jackie Stewart one in time?

What about Richard Hammond? I bet the FIA would fudge it for him.

Kovalainen is the right way to go though, he'll bring the car home in a respectable position and put them in with a chance of sneaking 3rd in the WCC back.

After the race in the States though if it's mathematically lost they should take a gamble on a young rookie driver.

I suspect heiki will not be driving for Lotus next year, I suspect he is in for the last two races only ... to me this makes more sense than sticking a noob in when your team are vying for championship places.

I don't think anybody thinks Heiki will be driving for Lotus next year (though he may be back in a Caterham). He has no experience of that car (although he did drive for Benneton many years ago), so it's hard to see that he's going to do anything great, even if you think Heiki is a great driver, which is debatable. I think they may as well give their test driver a chance. Hulkenberg would have made sense, assuming he'd have continued next year.

I think they still have an outside chance of second in the championship, which is going to be worth a lot of cash, so they're looking more to performance than any marketing oppurtunity.

Who knows? Might be interesting to watch.

It certainly does! On quite a few forums there are a number of 'interesting' comments on how Lotus have made a huge mistake no putting Valsecchi in the car. Personally, I think not. GP2 is a rich kids playground where they all drive like ego warriors on a car show trackday.

And then he slates Heikki.

Heikki is a Formula 1 GP winner. That is waaaay more than a GP2 title. And people forget that he had an inferior car to Lewis when they were both at McLaren.

Really? I didn't know that. I always thought that McLaren gave both drivers the same equipment.

What were the differences?
