How good does this look:

Though it's probably a fake.

This isn't a fake:

Midnight MX2 box.
Its XBMC app using the Navi-x video add on. Its not quite HD but the f1 channel from my virgin media pack is only available in SD anyway.
Thanks for the info. I'm looking at getting a MINIX NEO X8-H Plus as my Droid box so I can watch Sky Sports. The MiniX box is a little bit more expensive, but does get some impressive glowing reviews and comments.
I am a bit of an amateur in this but I found the only way to get Sky Sports/F1 on my Android Hudl was as a legit Sky Go user (you get up to two users free with a Sky subscription). Even so, the Sky Go app blocks the transmission when I try to connect a mini HDMI/HDMI cable from the Hudl to my TV. Similar, but differently, using Chromecast from my Win 7 laptop to the TV in full screen mode, Sky introduces a 5 second freeze every 20 seconds or so.

Trouble is, the old boy and his Sky sub aren't going to last for ever - so I need to get smarter!

I'll be honest I don't fully understand how the process works, but it looks like someone on the internet is streaming the live feed they get from Sky, and you piggie back off that. When I did my test on my Raspberry Pi, I found a channel with Sky F1 replaying the Russian GP. I watched for 15 minutes without any skips, stutters or freezes. But that's not to say I won't get any if I try again. When I went to watch the live Premier league game it stutters like made, and was almost un-watchable. I put that down to the hardware not being up to the job of handling all the encoding hence why I am looking at some new hardware which does seem to be able to handle live streaming.

Trouble is LG, the value is constantly being eroded and me only a poor pensioner Half the F1 is on BBC anyway and also now a fair bit of the footie has gone to BT. Any reliable free stream is always going to be transient at best (IMHO) as it is, let's face it, piracy. (But then here am I trying to get it for nowt ...!)

It's the cost of Sky Sports that puts me off, same goes for Virgin Media and BT Sports. They want silly money for something I would only occasionally watch on a wet weekend. Sure I'd make a point of watching the F1 races, but I can't just buy the F1 races for a sensible price. Even if you got down the NowTV route, they want stupid money. Why isn't there a F1 races pass, which gives me practise, qualifying and the race? They really need to get their act together, otherwise they will start to lose out to online options.

It reminds me of the music and the movie industry. Both were slow to embrace the power of online sales and broadcasting. Traditional broadcasters need to wake up to online broadcasting.

Then watch the BBC live races and highlights. Surely that's not too much of a hardship?

Or you could run a slightly cheaper car than the M3

This season was so boring that only having the highlights on BBC was a blessing.

I strongly suspect that if you found last season boring, F1 really isn't for you.

Whilst one team dominated, there was some great racing at the front and all the way through the field.
