Probably the Blade , as it has always been the most forgiving litre bike around.
I would buy the gixxer based on all round performance and looks.
I would suggest the R1 is the last bike for a newcomer , having seen very experienced mates riding them hard , they are prone to be shaking their head all the time and are not at all forgiving and are a right handful due to them being more track focused.
Looking forward to hearing what my friend has to say , he has ridden everything you can name over the last 30+ years.
He will like what he can lap fastest on .
When they went to the Island last year with a Busa , 12, Blackbird and a BMW , he preferred the BBird as it was friendlier to the rider , despite the awful linked braking system.

Another mate was due to get a new R1 shortly , I asked at the weekend when it was coming to hear that the purchase had been delayed a couple of months .
The bastard just got a Gallardo , which now sits alongside his 355

i have been thinking about upgrading mine. wasnt sure whether to look at the 03 plate blade or 04 r1.
someone once mentioned that the sv1000 (fully faired ones looked quite nice) wasnt a bad step up.
but imagine ulimately quite a bit slower than a 4pot litre bike and not much quicker than a 600?

I think the SV1000 uses the same engine that was in the TL1000R, so it's quite meaty. Not much quicker than a 600 sports I guess, but you get way more torque and would probably be easier to use on the road.
