I am sure they are quite reliable... I know there are a few issues with early 996's. Fieldl has all the info and sent me a really good PDF buying guide... I have got it somewhere
I would just be concerned about high mileage problems and the potential costs of parts and repairs.
I am a bit scared of used cars and prefer the safety of a manufacturers warranty.
That's not to say that I won't consider a 996.. maybe an 03 plate model for me though. But I would go into the purchase with my eyes wide open and spend ages finding the perfect car.

I'm always looking for the potential replacement, but I'm still not ready to replace the S
...the (much unloved) 996 could present itself as a bargain and that has surprised me.
Best I don't start researching to much

I spent a fair while researching and finding my car too. I wanted a black C4S, I bought one with low miles. Deluding myself that it would be better. That was a REALLY expensive mistake. It is difficult to run a 911 for reasonable money. Unless you buy one that is right down it's depreciation curve. Cars that are sub 30k are not going to lose much more, however early ropey 996's are now going for 20k, these are asking for trouble though. I have seen one car written off essentially as it needed a new engine. 2nd hand engine will cost at least 6-7k from a breakers. So an new engine will cost around 9k all in if the work is done by an indie.
3.4 engined cars also suffer from a few known terminal issues. As a bonus all cars can be placed under Porsche warranty on passing a 111 point check as long as the car has not passed it's 9th birthday and has less than ~100k miles. This costs

My estimates show that the 911 cost around 15k over 12 months to run.
you can lease a brand new 911 for that sort of yearly cost..

they ran a turbo in Evo didn't they? and spent a fortune on it.
admittedly not a normal life for one but still, if you buy high performance you'll pay high performance
