Take into account coaches, horse carts, tourists, amateurs in GT100's ;-)

Interesting question, I would be interested to know how they calculate a journey.

Read an article very recently where they had pulled together info from each of the main sat nav manufacturers on how they do their route planning and time.
the variance in times was evident but not particlualry huge. they work on complex analysis of trending etc. was an interesting read - cant find it now.

I use TomTom Live daily, and it compares EXTREMELY closely to data given from Googles routing.
Same map source too.

I often back check mileages with Google, as my employer does. Its bang on every time.
Not sure what happed at the ring though.
Funnier is the estimated fuel cost of 3.61Euro
And clicking 'avoid tolls' makes no difference.
