Traditionally the S3 used to be the premium product but if 28k is the list for the S3 and 32k is the list for R then I wonder why the pricing has changed?
Be careful! Unless you option the S3 as well, you're not comparing apples with other apples & the S3's more like 34 large, without trying.

I recently priced a Scirocco GT and threw it away & started again with an R, by the time you put on things that really need to be standard.

Furthermore, since Piëch split the group in half, VW is competing with Audi (hence the pointless VW Phantasm) is his mind at least. SEAT competes with Skoda. It'll take a couple of decades for public perception to catch up with that.

I would have said Piëch was uttely nuts, but look at the perception/reality of VAG! He's actually a brilliant strategist.

Kellogg's economics.

That's why it exists.

Alhough on the face of it, it could be a good car, perhaps would have been better as fwd.

I was looking to trade my Golf Edition 30 for a Golf R until I saw the prices !

My Edition 30 was £24500 otr whereas a Golf R with DSG and leather was silly money (as shown by the posts here!).

The difference between my Edition 30 and the Golf R merely 4wd. Same engine and oh, the Mk6 body, etc. Yeah, OK, all for about 15K extra for me when trading in. I thought not .... and still think not.

Shame, I bet it goes like stink going by how my remapped Edition 30 felt !

they haven't lost the plot - they are sticking to it

I can see why people gasp, but someone like me would never buy an R32

biggish, fast hatchbacks have never interested me and never will

I suspect I'm not alone

I know it's an awful thing to admit on this forum, but I bought a Mazda 3 MPS a few weeks ago. One of the good things about it is the amount of kit I got as standard with it. I was surprised when looking at other hot hatches, what is extra.

Nick - I configured an S3 and it came out at 34k and the R with similar options, infact less options came out at 37k. The bucket seats are a 3k option!!!!

Gad - It may well be in their plot but if you are taking it literally then perhaps I should of headed it up as "isnt the new R a tad expensive?". I actually totally get the R concept but as it was back in 2004, a limited subtle performance hatchback for a more mature driver. One of the reasons I got rid of the s2k for one.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Production lines running with plenty of spare capacity.

May as well make something, after all all those people are still being paid their salary.

As there is spare capacity, it pretty much means that there are plenty of L, GL, GLX etc sat in fields not selling... so make something different.

They will make enough of them to satisfy expected demand.
Plenty of people will buy it.

So was the design and production of the R deliberatley engineered for todays lull in the market?

Im guessing here but I would think the Rs intro was penned in some time ago and before the recession. I have not seen any evidence to suggest it was a rushed introduction to bolster flagging sales of their bread and butter.
